Choosing the right finish for your panel is crucial to achieving the desired results in your artwork. With seven different types of panel finishes offered by Trekell Art Supply, you have a range of options to explore. From acrylic gesso to watercolor paper, each finish serves a specific purpose and offers unique qualities.
Acrylic Gesso
- Gesso is very similar to white acrylic paint but thinner. It dries hard, primes your surface for paint and has a slightly toothy texture.
You can easily manipulate the texture by sanding for a smoother finish or applying thicker amounts of gesso with no sanding for a rough finish. Gesso is ideal for acrylic paint but can be used with oil as well.
Typically white, gesso can now be found in black, clear, neutral gray tone and more!
- Trekell offers gesso panels in 1/8" Baltic Birch Mini Panel Packs, 1/4" Baltic Birch, 1/2" Baltic Birch, 1/8" Hardboard, 7/8" Hardboard, 1 5/8" Hardboard, and 1/8" Aluminum Composite Material.
Acrylic Primed Linen
- Trekell offers Claessens Linen #13, that has been primed for acrylic or oil paint with two layers of titanium white and bound with glue. This fine weave linen is what is considered “portrait grade” and offers a smooth surface with little texture.
Linen tends to be stronger than cotton canvas so the fibers can be woven tighter for a more stable surface to paint on.

Lead Primed Linen
- This fine-weave Belgian linen has been primed with 1 coat of Titanium White and 2 coats of Crimnitz White. The surface of this linen has little to no texture, making it ideal for showcasing fine details.
Use Lead Primed Linen Panels with oil paint for best results.

Oil Ground
- Gamblin Oil Ground is a great alternative to gesso for oil painters. This ground is less absorbent, allowing the oil paint layers on top to retain their color saturation.
Gamblin Oil Ground can be applied to fabric (linen/cotton) or on top of acrylic gesso for bright-white, less absorbent ground layer. When applied properly, this ground should have a slightly toothy texture.
- Trekell offers Oil Ground panels in 1/4" Baltic Birch, 1/8" Hardboard, and 1/8" Aluminum Composite Material.
Oil Primed Linen
- This particular line of linen, Claessens #13, has been primed for oil paint using one layer of zinc white bound with linseed oil, then, after drying and sanding, a coating layer based on titanium white.
This fine weave linen is what is considered “portrait grade” and offers a smooth surface with little texture. Linen tends to be stronger than cotton canvas so the fibers can be woven tighter for a more stable surface to paint on.
- Trekell offers Oil Primed Linen panels in 1/4" Baltic Birch, 1/8" Hardboard, and 1/8" Aluminum Composite Material.
Quadruple Oil Primed Linen
- Renowned for its smoothness, the Artfix L64C Quadruple Oil Primed Linen has been sized twice to completely seal the fine-weave, Belgian linen. Four coats of an oil primer is then applied.
This primer is meant to look and feel like a lead primed surface without the toxicity. Use this surface for oil portrait and fine detail work.

Watercolor Paper
- Perfect for watercolor painting, these panels feature Fabriano Artistico paper. This mould made, 100% cotton paper is acid and chlorine free.
Watercolor paper is thicker, stronger and more absorbent than regular paper.
- Trekell offers Watercolor Paper panels in cold press 1/4" Baltic Birch.
